ReelTots is a fun & friendly introduction to Irish Dancing in a pressure-free environment. Classes focus on games and activities to enhance coordination, movement, balance, posture & rhythm – key skills for any form of dance.
Body Awareness
Before children can dance they need to develop their Body Awareness – the ability to understand where their bodies are in space and how their bodies move. To point your toe you need to use your toe, heel, arches, leg, knees, hip etc.
At ReelTots we play games, sing songs and have activities to start identifying these body parts. And more. It takes a lot of practice and concentration to keep those arms in and hands closed!
In particular we focus on balance. Small children need to practice jumping and hopping on one foot so as they get older they can use these skills to dance.
Irish Dancing Steps
At ReelTots children learn the basic Irish Dancing steps. They are following instructions and see the patterns in the steps. Children can then transition to a Beginners Irish Dancing class when they are a little older.
You can see some instructional videos of the basic steps on our YouTube channel if you want to practice at home!
We listen to Irish Dancing music and have clapping activities for the children to get use to listening to the rhythm and timing.
Parents at ReelTots classes
Parents stay with their children for the duration of the class and are welcome to take part with their children.
Smaller children often like to have their parent close by and that is absolutely fine. Other children demand their parents stay sitting and that’s fine too!
Parents learn language and techniques to help their children practice dancing at home as they get older.
